چکیده

We analyze the physical origin of plasmas that are ejected from the solar corona. To address this issue, we perform a comprehensive analysis of the elemental composition of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) using recently released elemental composition data for Fe, Mg, Si, S, C, N, Ne, and He as compared to O and H. We find that ICMEs exhibit a systematic abundance increase of elements with first ionization potential (FIP) < 10 eV, as well as a significant increase of Ne as compared to quasi-stationary solar wind. ICME plasmas have a stronger FIP effect than slow wind, which indicates either that an FIP process is active during the ICME ejection or that a different type of solar plasma is injected into ICMEs. The observed FIP fractionation is largest during times when the Fe ionic charge states are elevated above QFe > 12.0. For ICMEs with elevated charge states, the FIP effect is enhanced by 70% over that of the slow wind. We argue that the compositionally hot parts of ICMEs are active region loops that do not normally have access to the heliosphere through the processes that give rise to solar wind. We also discuss the implications of this result for solar energetic particles accelerated during solar eruptions and for the origin of the slow wind itself.

Solar Mini-Dimming Kinematics and Their Positive Correlations with Coronal Mass Ejections and Prominence

Solar mini-dimmings can be detect in the Extreme Ultra-Violet coronal eruptions. Here, sequences of 171_A images taken by Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembaly on 13 June 2010 are used. In this special day, both of coronal mass ejection and prominence were observed. The average velocities and accelerations of 500 mini-dimmings which were detected using on feature based classif...

The Composition of Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections

Interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) associated plasma can exhibit signatures in elemental, ionic and isotopic composition. These signatures occur in less than 50% of all ICMEs, but are very indicative of ICME plasma. We review these compositional anomalies and briefly discuss a physical scenario that could be responsible for these anoma-

Initiation of Coronal Mass Ejections in a Global Evolution Model

Loss of equilibrium of magnetic flux ropes is a leading candidate for the origin of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The aim of this paper is to explore to what extent this mechanism can account for the initiation of CMEs in the global context. A simplified MHD model for the global coronal magnetic field evolution in response to flux emergence and shearing by large-scale surface motions is ...

Anomalous-plasmoid-ejection-induced secondary magnetic reconnection: modeling solar flares and coronal mass ejections by laser–plasma experiments

The driving mechanism of solar flares and coronal mass ejections is a topic of ongoing debate, apart from the consensus that magnetic reconnection plays a key role during the impulsive process. While present solar research mostly depends on observations and theoretical models, laboratory experiments based on high-energy density facilities provide the third method for quantitatively comparing as...

Coronal Mass Ejections at High Temperatures 3

We now have extensive X-ray (Yohkoh) and EUV observations of the behavior of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) at high temperatures in the lower corona. We also now have coronagraph observations from space with which to make identiications of the related phenomena. This paper reviews theories and observations of CMEs in this new context.
